ORGANISERS of the Bridport Food Festival have launched a Facebook page to highlight their work and encourage debate about local produce.
The move by Bridport’s Local Food Group follows the town’s crowning as Best Dorset Food Town at the Taste of Dorset Awards.
Nearly 50 people joined in with the Facebook initiative in its first week, including MasterChef winner Mat Follas, owner of Beaminster’s Wild Garlic restaurant.
The Food Group now wants to get more people involved ahead of its first annual general meeting at The Salt House in West Bay at 6pm on 26 November. This event – billed as the Taste Of Bridport – will also offer local food and wine to taste, and it will declare the theme of next year’s festival to be making local food accessible to all.
Festival chairman Amanda Streatfeild, of Denhay Farms, said: “This year’s event was incredibly successful in terms of the producers and the numbers of people coming to see what we do, I think people really could see the potential of it.
“But we need new people to get involved. Whether they are a producer, a retailer or just lovers of local food, we’d like you to join us.
“Next year’s theme is aimed at getting the message across that good local food is there for everyone, not just the wealthy.
“By having a presence on Facebook we hope that people – and especially young people – will be able to see the work that we do.
“As time goes on, and more people join, we’d like to give more information about foods in season and a chance to question local producers.
“At the moment, for example, we are running a discussion on where are the best places to get local food.”
