67 artists, 9 days, 1 Lyme Regis ArtsFest

LYME REGIS will be given over to the Arts for nine packed days from September 25 to October 3. Besides the exhibitions in the Town Mill’s galleries, the Baptist Church Hall and the various open studios, visitors will be able to see art in nearly every business premises in Lyme’s main streets… not to mention dancing, busking and artists painting and an evening of live music and delicious food at The Town Mill on Wednesday 29 September.

There is a wide programme of workshops at which participants can learn, amongst many other things, how to make: a fascinator, an artist’s book, a silk painting and a lavender bag. Early risers can enjoy sunrise sketching and a sizzling breakfast at the By the Bay restaurant under the guidance of local artist, Christine Allison, whilst Gina Youens offers the opportunity to master the basics of calligraphy. Adrian Gray, the stone balancer, will be inviting the audience to have a go in his special ArtsFest competition.

The events timetable is probably ArtsFest’s richest yet, kicking off with a not-to-be-missed spectacle up at the Jam Factory – ‘From the Absurd to the Ridiculous’ on Saturday 25 September.

Literary and history-related events have a growing prominence with the Jane Austen and the French Lieutenant’s Woman walking tours, a talk on Mary Anning and a fascinating woodland walk to explore the architecture of the Undercliff and its inspiration for many literary greats.

Visitors can also enjoy talks on a range of topics including the history of stained glass and Richard Austen’s photography. LymeLit Night at the Marine Theatre on 1 October brings together many of Lyme’s literary connections in an evening of comedy, poetry and drama. Finally, The Slovenian Male Voice Choir (St Michael’s church on Saturday 2 October), B Sharp Busking, the Big Drumming Workshop and dancing in the street ensure that the visual and intellectual treats have a fantastic musical accompaniment.
