Steam wins Dorset film maker new business

FOLLOWING his success on The Guardian’s website with his film about The Electric Palace in Bridport, Eype film maker Dave Young has shot a colourful and characterful piece about the annual West Bay steam rally.

“He don’t want to go. He’s shy,” says one enthusiast, as he hand-cranks his engine until finally it runs.

“These small combustion engines, they’re actually a wonderful thing to play around with,” the film continues.

“Keep your fingers away from the moving parts and you can go to bed each night counting your fingers, and if you’ve got 10, then you go to sleep, and if you’ve got nine, then you’ve just got to go back and look for it, to find out where you left it…”

The Guardian’s online editor said that Steam was “glorious”; Gabby Hitchin, director of the Electric Palace, is keen to use it as the trailer for a winter movie season, starting in September.

Mr Young, the director of Pod Films, said: “It’s great that our films are going down so well. I like to shoot real people and am keen to show the quintessence of Englishness in its many forms.

“Everyone is interesting if you make the time to find out what makes them tick.

The Guardian like my style so we get to shoot a lot of my own ideas.”

Pod Films’ journalist producer Lesley Gillilan said: “We’ve been making short films for a while now. First for Channel 4 and now for Guardian Online.

“Our next step is to work with companies and individuals on creating films for marketing and promotional purposes or to enhance their online presence.

“As soon as Steam went online, we got a call from a leading creative agency asking us to make film about them and their work – this is an exciting development for us, especially as they want us to stick to our own distinctive style.”

    Enthusiasts

I sat with a glass of medicine in my hand and watched a parade of these vehicles returning from the green at West Bay to the site of this piece. A fascinating sight. They are all enthusiasts for their engines and vehicles – not chaps to get chatting in the local watering hole.

    Toots

Not long ago, one stopped off at our local watering hole – the stream at the bottom of The Enchanted Village. After taking on more water, it chugged up through the Square and let off a few toots, with a small tributary of squealing children running in its wake.
