Bridport artists & makers offer Eype surprises

ARTISTS and makers from around Bridport are holding an exhibition at Eype Centre for the Arts this Saturday and Sunday (July 3 from 10.30-6, July 4 from 10.30-4).

It will, says Marion Taylor, be “a fantastic combination of exciting art, quality crafts and superb food in a glorious setting.”

Now, Marion is one of the artists taking part, so, yes, she’s biased, but it’s true that the old church of St Peter’s is an appealing place to visit – and it is possible to combine a burst of culture with a walk on Eype Down or a trip to the beach and then come back for something to eat and drink at the exhibition. The grub’s being done by Manna Organics, whose stuff is good.

Artists include Marion Taylor, Terry Whitworth, Gemma Hibbs, John Rabbetts,  Charlotte Miller and photographers Sally Davies and Barbara Simons.

Makers include Katherine Lloyd (potter), Jackie Archer (painted furniture), Brendon Murless (sculpture) and Carolyn Stewart (painted screens).

Not all of them to my taste, but that’s how it should be. There’s no point having a mixed show where everything and everybody is the same.

Surprises are the real pleasure of a show like this. Who’s better than you remembered them being? Who’s better than you expected them to be? Who’s done something in (and of) West Dorset that sticks in your mind and along your nerves?

I wonder who it will be…
