I SUPPOSE that Bridport Town Council will have to re-arrange their seating plan now that, nationally, the Liberal Democrats have become the Conservative 2nd XI.
Instead of baiting those on the other side of the splendid chamber the poor old No hopers, jokers and rogues, as the Fisherman’s Friends might describe them, will have to bow down to instructions from party HQ and treat their new friends with due deference.
I expect that, in due course, we might even get a Conservative Mayor once again, perhaps even one that is taller than long grass.
In the meantime, poor old Cllr Tett, an independent, is going to feel even lonelier than before. Now that the two big gangs are amalgamating in all but name, he’ll be stuck out on his own.
Say what you like about the council but I think it does a good job. At least when there are meetings on it keeps the participants out of the pubs boring the boots off the rest of us – and that is no small mercy.
Editor’s Note: At the Annual Town Council meeting on 20 May, Councillor Geoffrey Ackerman (Liberal Democrat) was elected as Town Mayor and Councillor Maggie Ray (Liberal Democrat) was elected as Deputy Town Mayor. Councillor Dave Rickard (Liberal Democrat) was elected as the Leader of the Town Council.
A report on Bridport Radio says the town council chaplain wished “wisdom, truth and strength” upon the new Mayor.
It doesn’t reveal the Conservatives’ actions – or thoughts. Best left, perhaps, to the imagination.

Not hep-cats
For those of you who are not groovy hep-cats, unlike myself, The Fisherman’s Friends are a group of Cornish fishermen who have just recorded a CD of sea shanties and jolly good it is too and well worth a listen; there is a sample video on the Amazon site. Anyway, they seem to have hit it big and their offering is climbing the charts even as I write.
Yeah – right on man
More piffle from The Red Bladder. “Groovy hep cats” and “”climbing the charts” – bosh. This is a man entitled to his bus pass and who spends most of his waking hours listening to recordings of Puccini operas. Yeah – right on man. Although, to be fair, I have often heard the local councillors described as “a bunch of work-shy layabouts”.
