FIVE PEOPLE – including a pregnant woman and two small children – waded to safety last night after their car got stranded along a flooded road at Whitchurch Canonicorum.
An ambulance crew made sure the pregnant woman was OK.
Also, late last night, firefighters from Beaminster and Crewkerne towed a car to safety after two people got stuck in a flood near Broadwindsor.
This morning, the Environment Agency lifted flood warnings for Dorset, but trees and branches are still being blown down by winds reaching up to 80mph. The road through to the old mill in Loders is blocked (pictured below).
Also on Saturday, one of the main roads into the Marshwood Vale was blocked off by police. Pictured below was the scene at Dottery Cross on the B3162 north of Bridport. The BT van had come down from Shaftesbury.
The problem was further down the road, where an old tree had toppled over onto phone lines and was bouncing on them alarmingly. It looked as if a few more strong gusts of wind could send the tree crashing down through the lines and onto the road. The man in the BT van parked at Dottery Cross was waiting for reinforcements to arrive so the tree could be cut down and the phone lines checked. Another police car was stopping traffic from the other direction.
