Revealed: Bridport Domesday Book
THE EXTRAORDINARY range and number of people working in Bridport’s South West Quadrant can today be revealed for the first time.
Officially, the number of full-time jobs in and around St Michael’s Trading Estate is 112. That is the figure previously used in planning applications to redevelop the estate.
But foot-slogging research by the Friends of St Michael’s Trading Estate suggests the true number is nearly double that – more than 200.
To be exact, the Quadrant hosts the equivalent of 202.5 full-time jobs.
This figure suggests that there is an urgent need to revise official calculations about the economic value of redeveloping the Quadrant, as those calculations worked with the figure of 112.
Aside from that, the list compiled by Andrew Leppard has a fascination all of its own. It’s a snapshot of Bridport’s economic and cultural history, captured before it could all be changed forever, depending on the outcome of a planning appeal starting later this month.
Think of it as a kind of Bridport Domesday Book…
Here you will find theatrical groups, cleaners, an environmental consultant, an archaeologist, bathroom sellers, printers….
Small businesses in the SW Quadrant showing the number of Full-Time Equivalent jobs (FTE)
1. How is FTE worked out? Say five people work one day a week each – that is the equivalent of one person working full time.
2. It should also be noted that, although this list has been carefully checked, things change – numbers can change – and mistakes in transcription can occur. For example, it is possible that there is a spelling mistake in here somewhere! If you spot it, or if you wish to make any other corrections, please get in touch.

One Response to “Revealed: Bridport Domesday Book”
At last, some real investigative, intelligent, research into St Michaels.
Looking on the Dorset for You web site at the South West Quadrant details, Retaining Jobs is said to a key feature, but nowhere on the site does it detail how many new Commercial Businesses will be supported and how many jobs will be saved, or new jobs created. Also, the key factor of assisted rents is nowhere to be seen.
I know the Council, prior to this blog, had no idea how many commercial interests were on the site and therefore what effect it would have on the commercial community of St Michaels and on overall job losses.
I still suggest prior to the January 2010 meetings in West Bay, that they still have not looked at job retention/creation within their plan.
Yes it’s Haywoods appealing, but I suggest the Central Govt cash for Building on Brown Field sites has already being pledged and spent within the various Dorset Councils’ Budgets.
The fact that the council wanted to hold the meetings over 3 days in Dorchester shows that they wanted to stop the the St Michaels Business Community from attending. Why hold it in West Bay when there are plenty of suitable sites in Bridport within a minute’s walk of the Trading Estate?
