Ms Dean is involved with the Road for the Future project, which has been set up to look at ideas about the countryside, transport and access.

As Powerstock Hut is not itself the most easily accessible place in the world, especially on a Sunday afternoon, a free minibus will run from Bridport to Powerstock (and back again).

Passengers are promised “a special intervention” by Ms Dean to entertain them during the journey.

The minibus will leave the Nationwide bus stop, West Street, Bridport at 4.00pm sharp on Sunday, November 27, and the return trip will arrive back in Bridport by 7.45pm. Seats are bookable on a first come, first served basis.  Anyone interested is advised to book early with project manager Jo Morland on 01305 860461 or via joanna@jomorland.f9.co.uk.

According to Ms Morland: “Judith responds to different contexts using a wide range of media, including sculpture, installation, video and performance. She’s particularly interested in ideas of territory and claiming, and is often concerned with questions of behaviour, including her own. Judith will be showing images of recent projects and discussing their relevance to her work for Powerstock Common.”

Road for the Future is a year-long project offering artists’ residencies and commissions and educational workshops on the disused railway line between Maiden Newton and Bridport.

Sustrans is working to develop the route as a multi-use Trailway.

Powerstock Common nature reserve, long-leased by Dorset Wildlife Trust, is at the centre of the Trailway and is the focus for these collaborations between artists, educators, architects, makers and the community.

Road for the Future continues until May 2012.  Its first event was a residency by the Energy Café on Powerstock Common in April 2011, offering lunches using foraged and local produced ingredients.

The Energy Cafe can be seen in the video above by John Holman of Transition Vision TV, the online TV service for Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire.

New artworks made in response to different aspects of Powerstock Common will be shown to the public during April or May 2012.

Project partners are Dorset Wildlife Trust, Sustrans, the Architectural Association at Hooke Park, PVA MediaLab and Treewise Co-op.

Road for the Future is funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, West Dorset District Council, Artsway Associates and The Dorset Design and Heritage Forum.

How it happened then, that I ended up Frolic-ing last night, I’m not sure.

Tory HQ looked distinctly un-Oliver Letwin, decorated with feather boas, vinyl records hanging from the ceiling, giant posters of John Peel and Simon Callow but, weirdly, no glitter ball.

After paying the £3 to get in, there’s a poking ceremony with a giant plastic Flintstones club – but only if you’re new.

The music is a mix of classic floor-fillers and instant floor clearers (when the niche stuff comes out) but the vibe is fun and friendly, the dancing is unfettered by self-consciousness or talent and in true Bridport style, everyone is out to have a good time.

I will be going back.

West Dorset is the land of the un-smart phone, and nowhere is there an un-smarter phone than this.

This is the BT phone box in Leigh, a few miles from Sherborne.

It’s settled so much into the local landscape that it looks like it’s about to fall over and is only kept upright by the friendly hedge.

See this phone box for the first time, especially, and you wonder: why is it here in this exact spot? Did it fall off the side of a lorry and no one has ever bothered to collect it? Did the bloke who was installing it just think, sod it – here will do? (It’s a definite bloke thing, this box; no woman I know would leave something looking like this).

It’s actually not too far from houses in Leigh, but I have never seen anybody using it, or even looking like they were thinking of using it.

Personally, I like it very much. I think it’s a fascinating symbol of modern West Dorset life, but even I’ll concede that there may be squeamish sorts who are wary of going inside it – and touching it…

Nothing about the phone box in Leigh makes you think it’s a facility that British Telecom wish to maintain. In this respect, you can argue it’s a symbol of the indifference of large corporations and organisations to the needs and desires of Dorset villages. It’s part of the same trend as Post Office closures and the county council’s shutdown of libraries.

Or you might argue that it’s a sign of wilful neglect by villagers in Leigh, a mark of the failure of the so-called Big Society, an idea that Conservative Cabinet minister and West Dorset MP Oliver Letwin says is enshrined in West Dorset as nowhere else. Dr Letwin wants the rest of the country to be more like West Dorset.

In short, Leigh’s phone box offers a lot to look at and think about. That’s why it’s Number One in the new Real West Dorset guide to Things to See & Do.

How to get there

From the middle of Leigh, by the war memorial, take the road out towards Chetnole, and it’s down past the village hall.

It’s best seen in July and August before the verge is cut and the hedge is trimmed back a bit.

If you want to use it, you’ll need to take a card with you, or reverse charges. Otherwise, entrance is free. No smoking’s allowed.

I can’t guarantee that the snail will still be there.
